The Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, Cape buffalo and rhinoceros — have long been the most sought-after animals on safari. In Tanzania, your chances of seeing all five are among the best in Africa, particularly on a well-planned private itinerary.
The Ngorongoro Crater is the standout location for rhino. This ancient caldera holds a small but stable population of rare black rhino, and its compact size means sightings, while never guaranteed, are more frequent here than almost anywhere else in Tanzania.
The Serengeti is unbeatable for big cats. Lions are seen on almost every drive, and with patience and a skilled guide, leopards are regularly spotted resting in acacia trees. Cheetahs are also common across the open plains, adding to the cat count.
Tarangire National Park is a haven for elephants, with some of the largest herds in northern Tanzania gathering along the Tarangire River. Cape buffalo are abundant throughout all major parks, often seen in large herds across the plains.
A classic Big Five safari combines these parks to maximise your chances across the week. Our private safaris focus on quality sightings over quantity, with time to watch behaviour rather than rushing from one tick to the next. We also emphasise ethical viewing and minimal impact on wildlife.

Frequently asked questions
Can I see all of the Big Five in Tanzania?
Yes. On a well-planned itinerary covering the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire, most of our guests see lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino over the course of their trip. Lion, elephant and buffalo are seen on almost every safari, and leopard sightings are common in the Serengeti with a patient guide who reads the trees. Rhino are the hardest of the five, but the Ngorongoro Crater holds a small, stable population of black rhino and offers the most reliable chance. We route your trip to maximise the odds, allowing extra time in the crater and the right habitats, while always being honest that wildlife is never guaranteed. The chase is part of the joy.
Which parks are best for the Big Five?
Each park has its speciality. The Ngorongoro Crater is best for rhino, thanks to its compact floor and a resident black rhino population, and it also delivers dense concentrations of lion and elephant. The Serengeti is best for lion, leopard and cheetah, with vast open plains that make big cats easier to follow and photograph. Tarangire excels for elephants, hosting some of the largest herds in northern Tanzania, and its buffalo numbers are strong too. Lake Manyara adds a scenic, bird-rich stop along the way. Combining all three on a single private itinerary gives you the highest chance of completing the set, because each park covers the weaknesses of the others. Spend your nights wisely and the Big Five become very achievable.
When is the best time for a Big Five safari?
June to October is the dry season and the most popular window, with sparse vegetation, animals gathering around water and generally easier spotting. The bush is thin, so leopards resting in trees and rhino on the crater floor are simpler to find. January to March is also excellent, especially for predators on the southern Serengeti plains, where the calving season draws big cats and their cubs into the open. The green season brings lush scenery, fewer vehicles and lower prices, with the trade-off of taller grass and occasional showers. Importantly, the Big Five are resident year-round — the seasons change how easily you see them, not whether they are there. If your dates are fixed, we will build the route around what is most visible at that time of year.
Are Big Five safaris suitable for photography?
Yes — they are superb. The combination of varied habitats, good visibility in the dry season and patient private guiding makes for excellent photographic opportunities, whether you shoot big cats on the plains, elephants at the river or rhino on the crater floor. Because your vehicle is private, your guide can position you for the light, wait for an animal to lift its head, and stay as long as the moment lasts. Early starts and flexible timings let you make the most of golden hour, when the first and last light of the day is at its warmest. Ask us for a photographic vehicle with a pop-up roof, camera rests and space for tripods, and tell your guide what you hope to capture — it makes a real difference.
Is it ethical to focus on the Big Five?
We believe firmly in responsible wildlife viewing. Our guides maintain safe and respectful distances, avoid crowding or pressuring animals, keep to park regulations and never encourage wildlife to approach the vehicle. The Big Five are a useful and exciting focus, but they are only part of the story, and we take time to appreciate the full ecosystem — birds, smaller mammals, reptiles, plants and the landscapes that hold them all together. A safari that slows down and watches behaviour often delivers more than one that rushes from tick to tick. Travelling with a local operator based in Moshi also means your trip supports guides, cooks and communities directly. Good ethics and great sightings are not in conflict — in our experience they go hand in hand.
How many days do I need?
A minimum of five days is realistic if you want to combine the key parks without feeling rushed. Even that short trip can cover Tarangire, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. Six to seven days is ideal for a more relaxed pace, with extra nights in the Serengeti improving your chances for elusive species such as leopard, and more time in the crater for rhino. If you can stretch to eight to ten days, you can add the migration, a second Serengeti region or a walking area without long drives. We generally advise fewer camps and longer stays over a packed checklist, as settling into one place lets the wildlife come to you. Tell us your available time and we will shape the best possible route within it.
Can I do a Big Five safari as a private trip?
Yes — all our Big Five safaris are private by default. You have your own vehicle, your own guide and a flexible itinerary, so you can spend as much time as you like at the sightings that interest you most. That means waiting quietly for a leopard to move, following a lion pride at dawn, or lingering beside a rhino without watching the clock. It also lets you set your own pace for meals, rest and the occasional early night, which matters on a long trip. A private trip does not have to mean a luxury trip, either: we can match the level of camp and lodge to your budget. Families, couples and photographers all benefit most from the freedom a private vehicle brings.
Are there any alternatives to the classic northern route?
The Northern Circuit — the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara — offers the highest chance of seeing all five, so it remains our classic recommendation. That said, the Southern Circuit, including Ruaha and Nyerere, can also deliver lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo in far wilder, less-visited settings, though rhino are much less common there. For a more remote, adventurous feel with excellent predator viewing, the south is hard to beat. We can also combine circuits, or design a fly-in route that links distant parks to save driving time. Whichever direction you choose, we tailor the route to your interests, your dates and your budget, and we will be honest about where each of the Big Five is most likely to appear.
