About this safari
The 21-Day Ultimate Tanzania Expedition is the fullest safari we build. Three weeks allow you to see the northern circuit properly, fly to the immense southern reserves, and still finish with a generous week on Zanzibar. Nothing feels rushed, and nothing significant is left out.
You start gently in Arusha National Park, then work through Tarangire, Lake Manyara and the Serengeti, following the seasons and the migration. The Ngorongoro Crater and the cultural landscapes of Lake Eyasi complete the north. From there light aircraft open up the south: Ruaha, a stronghold of lion and wild dog, and Nyerere National Park, where boat safaris on the Rufiji River reveal a different Africa entirely.
The final chapter is pure recovery. On Zanzibar you have five nights to dive the reefs, sail the coast, explore Stone Town and Jozani Forest, and let the safari dust settle.
It is a private, tailor-made expedition for travellers who would rather see everything once than a little twice, guided throughout by people who live here.

Day-by-day plan
Arrival in Moshi or Arusha
You are met at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Over a welcome dinner your guide outlines the three-week route and answers every question about the journey ahead.
Arusha National Park
Begin with a gentle day in Arusha National Park, beneath the slopes of Mount Meru. A guided walking safari brings you close to giraffes and buffalo, and a canoe trip on the Momella Lakes offers a tranquil, bird-rich afternoon.
Tarangire National Park
Drive south to Tarangire National Park, famous for its elephant families and monumental baobab trees. An afternoon game drive follows the Tarangire River, where wildlife gathers as the surrounding land dries out.
Lake Manyara National Park
Continue to Lake Manyara National Park beneath the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Look for tree-climbing lions, big baboon troops and hippos, and enjoy the spectacle of flamingos massing on the soda lake when conditions allow.
Into the Serengeti
Cross the Ngorongoro highlands and enter the Serengeti National Park. An afternoon drive through the Seronera Valley introduces its leopards, lions and cheetahs before you settle into camp for the night.
Central Serengeti — full day
A full day in the Seronera region, where the resident predator populations are among the most reliable in Africa. Dawn and dusk drives maximise your chances of witnessing a hunt, and the birdlife along the rivers is superb.
Northern Serengeti & Mara River
Move north towards the Mara River, the dramatic stage for the migration’s crossings between roughly July and October. The north also offers beautiful kopje country and far fewer vehicles than the centre.
Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater Rim
A morning drive south via Olduvai Gorge brings you to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. Settle in with panoramic views over the caldera and a spectacular highland sunset.
Ngorongoro Crater
Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater at first light. Some 25,000 large animals live within its walls, including all of the Big Five and a healthy black rhino population. The crater is one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on Earth.
Lake Eyasi & the Hadzabe
Drop into the Rift Valley to Lake Eyasi for a morning with the Hadzabe hunter-gatherers and a visit to a Datoga community. This cultural encounter offers a rare, humbling insight into a vanishing way of life.
Fly south to Ruaha National Park
Transfer to Arusha and fly by light aircraft to Ruaha National Park, Tanzania’s largest. A rugged, baobab-studded wilderness bisected by the Great Ruaha River, it is almost free of tourists and rich in wildlife and atmosphere.
Ruaha — full day
A full day exploring Ruaha’s river valleys and rocky hills. The park is renowned for its lions and African wild dogs, alongside elephant, buffalo, kudu and roan antelope. With so few vehicles, every sighting feels private.
Fly to Nyerere National Park
Fly east to Nyerere National Park (the former Selous Game Reserve), the largest protected area in Africa. Settle into your camp beside the Rufiji River and enjoy an afternoon activity as the light turns golden.
Nyerere — boat safari
Spend the morning on the water, drifting the Rufiji River by boat among hippos, crocodiles and a spectacular array of waterbirds. In the afternoon, game drive the surrounding bush for lion, elephant and the chance of wild dog.
Nyerere — walking & game drives
A second full day in Nyerere. Walk with an armed ranger in the cool of the morning, then explore by vehicle through the afternoon. The reserve’s sheer scale and diversity make it one of the most rewarding safari destinations in Africa.
Fly to Zanzibar — Stone Town
Fly from the bush to Zanzibar. Transfer to historic Stone Town and explore its UNESCO-listed lanes, carved doors and waterfront on a guided walk, then overnight in a boutique hotel.
Zanzibar beach
Move to the coast and check into your beach resort. Spend the afternoon swimming, snorkelling or simply relaxing as the expedition finally gives way to holiday. The Indian Ocean is warm and impossibly blue.
Diving & sail excursion
A full day of island adventure — dive or snorkel the coral gardens, or join a dhow cruise to a sandbank with a seafood lunch on board. The reefs here are among the finest in East Africa.
Jozani Forest & spice farm
Visit Jozani Forest to see the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey, then tour a working spice farm to discover how cloves, cinnamon and vanilla are grown and processed. A fragrant, colourful day inland.
Zanzibar at leisure
Your final full day on the island, entirely free. Book a massage, explore a fishing village, paddle a kayak, or simply rotate between the pool, the sea and the shade. The choice, and the pace, are yours.
Departure
After breakfast you are transferred to Zanzibar International Airport for your flight home. Three weeks, eight protected areas, one unforgettable country — and still plenty of reasons to return.

Best time to take this tour
The dry season from June to October gives the best conditions across both the northern and southern parks. Zanzibar is sunniest in the same window.
| Season | Weather | Crowds | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan–Mar | Hot and mostly dry | Moderate | Southern Serengeti calving and calm, warm seas |
| Apr–May | Long rains | Low | Lush green parks, quiet reserves and the lowest rates |
| Jun–Oct | Dry, cool mornings | High | Prime viewing across the north and south; best beach weather |
| Nov–Dec | Short rains | Moderate | Green landscapes, excellent birding and a festive island mood |
Route & logistics
The route sweeps across the entire country. From Arusha you complete the northern circuit — Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro — before light aircraft carry you to Ruaha and Nyerere in the south. A final flight reaches Zanzibar.
Because the distances are so great, internal flights do the heavy lifting. Luggage on the light aircraft is limited to soft bags of about 15 kg, which we will confirm when your trip is booked.
Frequently asked questions
Three weeks is a long trip — is it tiring?
It is well paced, with two or three nights in most places and two flying days that rest you. The final week on Zanzibar is deliberately slow, so you finish refreshed rather than exhausted.
How many internal flights are there?
Three: Arusha to Ruaha, Ruaha to Nyerere, and Nyerere to Zanzibar. They are included in the price and greatly reduce long road transfers.
Is this suitable for a first safari?
It can be, though it is designed for travellers who want maximum variety. If it is your first safari and time is limited, we would suggest a shorter northern circuit instead.
When is the best time to go?
June to October is ideal for both halves of the safari and for the beach. January to March is also strong. The southern reserves are largely closed during the long rains of April and May.
Can the route be customised?
Yes — every element can be changed. Add Gombe or Mahale for chimpanzees, swap Zanzibar for Pemba or Mafia, or remove the southern leg. We build the itinerary around you.
What fitness level is required?
A reasonable general level is enough. Walking safaris and cultural visits are gentle, and there is no technical hiking. Talk to us about any mobility needs.
