About this safari

Short on time but big on ambition? This 2-Day Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari packs two of Tanzania’s finest experiences into one unforgettable weekend. It is ideal for travellers already in Moshi or Arusha — or for anyone adding a quick wildlife fix before or after a Kilimanjaro climb.

Day one takes you to Tarangire National Park, a quiet giant among northern parks, where elephants move in great herds beneath ancient baobab trees and the Tarangire River draws game all year. Day two is the showpiece: an early descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO-listed caldera that shelters around 25,000 large animals.

The tour is private and runs with your own 4x4, guide and flexible schedule. Despite the short duration you get full game drives in both destinations, comfortable overnight accommodation, and all park fees handled for you.

It is the perfect taster for first-time visitors — a chance to see the Big Five’s strongest cast members, including the endangered black rhino, without committing to a long itinerary.

Highlights

What makes this tour special

Day-by-day plan

Day 1
Big game day

Moshi or Arusha to Tarangire National Park

You are collected early from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha and driven south-west to Tarangire National Park — roughly a two to three hour journey through Maasai grazing land on the edge of the Great Rift Valley. After registering at the gate, you begin a full afternoon game drive along the Tarangire River.

Expect large elephant herds, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and a good chance of lion. The park’s signature baobabs and open savannah make even the quiet moments scenic. In the evening you settle into your lodge or tented camp for dinner and a night under the stars.

Big Five chance

Ngorongoro Crater and return

An early start brings you to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. You descend 600 metres on a rough track into a self-contained Eden where some 25,000 large animals live year-round. A full crater-floor game drive follows, with picnic lunch beside the hippo pool.

Lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, hyena and vast plains game are all common here, and the crater is one of the best places in Tanzania to see the endangered black rhino. After the drive you climb back to the rim and return to Arusha or Moshi by evening, arriving in time for onward travel.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really see the highlights in only two days?

Yes. With an early start and a private vehicle you cover a full game drive in Tarangire and a full crater descent. It is a taster rather than a deep dive, but it works beautifully.

Is this tour private?

It is. You travel with your own guide and 4x4, so timings and stops are entirely up to you.

Will I see the Big Five?

The crater gives you strong odds for lion, buffalo and elephant, and the best chance of black rhino anywhere in Tanzania. Leopard is the least likely on such a short trip.

What is the best time of year?

June to October is the most reliable. January to March is also excellent and greener. April and May are wet but quiet and affordable.

What should I bring?

Neutral clothing, a warm layer for early morning drives, sun protection, binoculars, insect repellent and your camera. A detailed packing list comes with your booking.

Can I add a night or a Kilimanjaro climb?

Absolutely. Many guests extend to a longer Northern Circuit safari or add a mountain climb or Zanzibar beach stay. We will quote it for you.
