You do not need a huge budget to have a wonderful safari in Tanzania. The parks, the guides and the wildlife are the same whether you sleep in a campsite or a luxury camp, and a well-planned value trip can feel every bit as special as a costly one.
What drives the price is mostly when you travel, where you stay and how you move. Park fees are fixed by the government, but accommodation ranges enormously, and the season changes both prices and crowds. Understanding these three things lets you get far more safari for your money.
The simplest saving is timing. The green season, roughly November to March excluding the busy Christmas period, brings lower lodge rates, quieter parks and lush scenery, with excellent birdlife and strong predator viewing. The long rains of April and May are the cheapest of all.
Accommodation choice matters just as much. Simple lodges, public campsites and tented camps cost a fraction of luxury camps, and group-joining departures let you share a vehicle with other travellers to split the cost. Shorter itineraries of three to five days keep the total down while still covering the highlights.
We are a local operator based in Moshi, so there is no middleman adding to the price. We will show you exactly where your money goes, be honest about what a lower budget can and cannot do, and never cut corners on safety, guiding or vehicles.
However much you have to spend, our aim is the same: a well-run trip, a great guide and wildlife you will remember for the rest of your life.

Frequently asked questions
How cheap can a Tanzania safari be?
A short camping or group-joining trip on the northern circuit can start from around US$690 per person for two days, rising with length and comfort. The biggest levers on the final price are the season, the standard of accommodation and how many people share the vehicle. Travelling in the green season, choosing simple lodges or campsites, and joining a small group all bring the cost down without spoiling the experience. Park fees are fixed by the government and apply to every trip, private or shared, so they set a natural floor. Shorter itineraries of three to five days also keep the total manageable while still covering the main highlights. Tell us your budget and interests and we will design the best trip that fits.
What is not included in a budget safari?
International flights, the Tanzania visa, travel insurance, drinks, tips and optional extras such as balloon safaris are usually excluded from the price. Park fees, meals during the safari, an experienced guide and a 4x4 vehicle are normally included, along with accommodation and transfers. Each itinerary lists the inclusions and exclusions clearly, so there are no surprises when you arrive. It is worth budgeting a little extra for drinks, souvenirs and gratuities for your guide and cook, which are customary but entirely at your discretion. We are happy to quote pre- and post-safari hotel nights, internal flights or a Zanzibar add-on if you want them arranged too. Just ask, and we will set it all out in writing before you book.
Is the green season good for a safari?
Yes, and it is one of the best-value times to travel. From November to March you get lower prices, far fewer vehicles and beautiful green landscapes, with excellent birdlife and reliable predator sightings. Migratory birds arrive, many residents show bright breeding plumage, and the light after rain is wonderful for photography. The main wet period, April and May, is the cheapest of all, when some remote tracks and airstrips can be affected but the parks are at their most lush and private. The trade-off is taller grass and the chance of a shower, usually brief and often overnight. If you value space, price and spectacular scenery over guaranteed dry weather, the green season rewards you generously.
Are budget safaris safe?
They are, when they are run properly. Safety comes from well-maintained vehicles, careful driving, experienced guides and sensible rules in camp — none of which should ever be sacrificed to save money, and none of which we do. Our drivers are qualified and hold the relevant permits, vehicles are serviced regularly and equipped for the terrain, and we follow park regulations at all times. A budget trip changes the standard of your accommodation, not the standard of your safety or guiding. We are also a local operator based in Moshi, so we know the roads and conditions first-hand and can adjust if weather or circumstances require. Whatever you spend, you travel with the same care and attention.
Will I share a vehicle?
Only if you choose a group-joining departure. On those trips you share a 4x4 and guide with a small number of other travellers, usually between four and seven people in total, which is what lowers the per-person cost. A private value safari still gives you your own 4x4 and guide, even at a modest budget, so you set the pace and linger where you like. Sharing can be a sociable and enjoyable way to travel, and it works especially well for solo travellers; the trade-off is that the group decides when to move on. Many guests begin with a joining departure and discover they love the company. Tell us your preference and we will quote both options honestly so you can compare.
Can I upgrade parts of the trip?
Certainly, and many guests do. A common approach is to mix a few comfortable lodges with simpler camps, or to add a night or two at a nicer place in the middle of the trip, perhaps after a run of basic camping. You might upgrade just the Serengeti nights, or treat yourself to a final night at a lodge with a view. Because every change is priced separately and shown in full, you stay in control of the budget throughout. Upgrading is rarely all-or-nothing — small, targeted changes often deliver the biggest lift in comfort for the least extra cost. Tell us which parts matter most to you and we will suggest the trades that give you the best value for your money.
Is a budget safari suitable for solo travellers?
Yes, absolutely. Group-joining departures are a cost-effective and sociable choice for solo travellers, since you share the vehicle and its costs with a small group of like-minded people, and camping trips work well too. It is a friendly, easy way to travel without paying a single supplement. A private trip is also possible if you prefer your own company and your own schedule, though the per-person price is naturally higher when travelling alone, as costs are not shared. Either way, our guides are used to welcoming solo guests, and you will never feel out of place. For extra peace of mind, ask about the group size and the mix of travellers before you confirm.
Do I still get a good guide?
Always. Every trip, whatever the budget, comes with an experienced English-speaking guide who knows the parks, the wildlife and the best routes. The standard of guiding is not something we compromise on, because a great guide is what turns a good safari into an unforgettable one — spotting the leopard you would have missed, explaining animal behaviour, and reading the bush in a way no book can teach. Our guides hold the proper licences, are skilled drivers, and take genuine pride in their work. Many guests tell us their guide was the highlight of the whole trip. Whichever trip you choose, you get the same quality of guiding, care and local knowledge that we would want for our own families.
