About this safari
The 15-Day Tanzania Explorer Safari is the most comprehensive tour we run in the north of the country — a true expedition for travellers who want to see it all. Over more than two weeks it weaves together six world-class destinations, from the forested slopes of Arusha to the wild volcanic shores of Lake Natron.
Days are generous throughout. You spend four nights in the Serengeti across two different sectors, following the Great Migration while also exploring the predator-rich Seronera Valley. A full day on the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater closes the safari in unforgettable style.
What sets the explorer apart is its depth. Guided walking safaris, waterfall treks at Lake Natron, coffee-farm and cultural visits with Maasai and Iraqw communities, and unhurried game drives all feature. Nothing is rushed, and no landscape is merely passed through.
With luxury lodges and tented camps, expert private guides and a considered pace, this is the definitive Tanzanian safari — the trip of a lifetime, explored properly.

Day-by-day plan
Arrival in Moshi or Arusha
You are met at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel beneath Mount Kilimanjaro. In the evening your guide hosts a welcome briefing, setting out the fifteen-day explorer route and answering every question about the adventure ahead.
Arusha National Park
The journey begins at Arusha National Park, a beautiful blend of rainforest, grassland and crater lakes. A guided walking safari brings you closer to giraffe, buffalo and zebra than a vehicle allows, before an afternoon game drive to the Ngurdoto Crater and the flamingo-rich Momella Lakes.
Tarangire National Park
Travel south to Tarangire National Park, celebrated for its ancient baobabs and the greatest concentration of elephants in northern Tanzania. An afternoon game drive along the Tarangire River finds herds gathered at the water, with superb birding and good odds of lion.
Lake Manyara National Park
Continue to Lake Manyara National Park, a slender park of groundwater forest and soda lake set against the Rift Valley escarpment. Search for the famous tree-climbing lions, watch hippos in the shallows and admire the flamingos that fringe the shoreline in season.
Rift Valley to Lake Natron
Drive north along the Rift Valley escarpment toward remote Lake Natron. The austere volcanic scenery, the crimson-tinted water and the perfect cone of Ol Doinyo Lengai make this one of the most arresting landscapes in East Africa. Arrive for a spectacular sunset.
Lake Natron – waterfalls & flamingos
A full day on foot at Lake Natron. Hike to the Engare Sero waterfalls, a lush gorge cut into the volcanic rock, and visit the lakeshore where vast flocks of lesser flamingos feed. In the afternoon, meet the Maasai families who live in this remote and beautiful land.
Lake Natron to the Serengeti
Take the wild northern route into the Serengeti National Park, entering through remote country few visitors see. A game drive on arrival explores this sector, where big cats and, in season, the migrating herds roam. Settle into your camp in the northern Serengeti.
Serengeti – northern sector
A full day in the northern Serengeti, the arena of the famed Mara River crossings from mid-year onward. Even outside the crossing season the riverine woodland and kopjes are alive with predator and prey. Long, patient drives make the most of this remote, spectacular country.
Serengeti – central sector
Journey south through the park to the Seronera Valley, the beating heart of the Serengeti. The Seronera River supports year-round concentrations of wildlife, and its leopard-draped trees and granite kopjes are among the most photographed in Africa. Two nights in the centre of the action begin here.
Serengeti – full day
A full day to explore the central Serengeti, with dawn and dusk drives timed for the predators. Depending on the season your guide may head toward the southern plains, the western corridor or the Grumeti River. Optional hot-air balloon safari at sunrise for a bird’s-eye view of the plains.
Serengeti to the Ngorongoro highlands
A final morning game drive in the Serengeti precedes the climb into the Ngorongoro highlands. En route, an optional Maasai village visit offers a warm, genuine encounter with local pastoral culture. Arrive on the crater rim as the light turns golden.
Ngorongoro Crater
Descend onto the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater for a full day of game driving in the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Around 25,000 large animals live here, and all of the Big Five are possible, including the endangered black rhino. Picnic at the hippo pool before returning to the rim.
Karatu & highlands
A relaxed day in the highlands around Karatu. Choose from a coffee and banana plantation tour, a guided forest walk among birdlife, or a cultural walk with the Iraqw people and their meticulously terraced farms. It is a gentle, restorative day of the explorer safari.
Lake Manyara & the Rift Valley
Return to the Rift Valley for a second, unhurried visit to Lake Manyara National Park, or relax at your lodge with optional birding and forest walks. The day brings the journey full circle and offers a calm pause before departure.
Departure
After breakfast, drive to Arusha or Moshi for your onward flight. Fifteen days, six destinations and countless memories later, the explorer safari comes to a close — though a Zanzibar beach stay or a Kilimanjaro climb can extend it further.

Best time to take this tour
The explorer safari runs throughout the year, but the dry season from June to October gives the best access to Lake Natron and the most consistent wildlife viewing.
| Season | Weather | Crowds | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan–Mar | Warm, mostly dry | Moderate | Calving on the southern plains; superb predator sightings |
| Apr–May | Long rains | Low | Green, quiet and affordable; some Lake Natron tracks may be difficult |
| Jun–Oct | Dry, cool mornings | High | Best conditions for every park, plus the peak of the migration |
| Nov–Dec | Short rains | Moderate | Fresh green landscapes, excellent birding and light showers |
Route & logistics
The explorer safari is the longest loop we run from Arusha or Moshi, taking in Arusha National Park, Tarangire and Lake Manyara before the detour to Lake Natron and the northern route into the Serengeti. It ends via the Ngorongoro Crater, Karatu and the Rift Valley.
Travel is by private safari-equipped 4x4 throughout. The Lake Natron roads are rough and remote, and where time is short, scheduled or charter flights can replace the longest legs at extra cost.
Frequently asked questions
Who is this safari designed for?
Travellers who want a deeply comprehensive, unhurried Tanzanian safari — extra time in the Serengeti, the remote Lake Natron region, walking and cultural experiences, and no rushing between parks.
Is Lake Natron included, and is it safe?
Yes, Lake Natron is a highlight. The area is safe and stunning; roads are rough in places but our guides and vehicles handle them comfortably.
Why two sectors of the Serengeti?
The park is vast and wildlife shifts with the seasons. Staying in both the north and the central plains lets you experience different habitats and a far wider range of wildlife.
Is this a private safari?
Yes — your own 4x4, your own guide, flexible dates and an itinerary that can be tailored to your interests.
What is the best time to take this tour?
June to October offers the best conditions and the peak of the migration. The green season from November to May is quieter and more affordable but can bring rain.
Can I add Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro?
Of course. A Zanzibar beach stay or a Kilimanjaro climb extends the journey beautifully, and we will incorporate it into your quote.
