About this tour

Tour Overview

Ol’Doinyo Lengai is the “Mountain of God” for the Maasai. 4 Days Oldonyo Lengai Trekking is a 4 Day Walking Safari With Oldonyo Lengai Treks which requires 4-5 hours which is moderate exertion, the ascent is quite difficult and challenging because the mountain is very steep and climbers are exposed to the hot sun as there is almost not any shade. The best time to climb the mountain is early in the morning before the sun gets too hot, Herds of zebra and wildebeest can sometimes be seen on the trip. A trip to the mountain can also cover other nearby areas of interest like Lake Natron, which is a breeding ground for all East African flamingoes and other birds. There are several Maasai bomas (villages) which can be visited on additional cost just talk to your driver guide if you are interested and one can also visit the nearby Mount Gelai which has geysers and a brilliant waterfall.

Itinerary

Departing Arusha in the morning drive to Mto-wa Mbu (Lake Manyara) for lunch. After lunch you drive north along the bottom of the Great Rift Valley wall to Lake Natron and the village of Ngare Sero at the base of Oldonyo Lengai. Overnight at a campsite by the lake.

From Lake Natron to Ngare Sero is a 3-hour walk. Lengai is best approached from the west. Between Ngare Sero and Lengai’s lower slopes is another 3 hours walk. The vehicle will go o¬n ahead here so that it is there to take you up this large gully and so saving you at least 6 hours of walking. Overnight camp in the gully.

A very early start in order to gain as much height as possible in the cool of the morning. Sun hats and a large water in-take are essential. Descend by the same route.Great care should be taken o¬n the way down: loose volcanic gravel o¬n bare rock makes it dangerous going in places. Overnight at the Lake Natron camp site.

Departing after breakfast you drive back to Arusha town. Drop-off at the hotel or to the airport for Zanzibar or connect flight back home.

Frequently asked questions

Airport transfers are not included in the price of this tour, however you can book for an arrival transfer in advance. Our representative will be at the airport to greet you. To arrange this please contact our customer service team once you have a confirmed booking.

You are expected to carry your own day pack, with only things which should be able to sustain you until you reach the next camp at the end of the day. You do not need to carry your personal backpack/ duffel pack - It will be carried by our porters.

No worries about that - this is a common concern. It is much better for your body if you proceed slowly and guides will permanently remind you about this (“pole-pole” - which means “slowly slowly”). By walking slowly, your body will much better acclimatize to high altitude.

There is plenty of time allocated each day for the treks, even for those who like to go very slowly.

Some climbers may fall short of reaching the summit, but not at the expense of their overall experience. Even for those who never reached the top, the experience of the wonders of Kilimanjaro is very rewarding.

If one or more members of the group decide they cannot continue, or if a guide deems it unsafe for an individual (or a group) to continue, they are escorted to the most convenient campsite or Hut.

Our guides intimately know the network of shortcuts to escort climbers to safety, and they are trained to act quickly and calmly under any circumstance.

On the Mount Meru, there are simple basic Huts. The first 2 Huts sleep four people each and the last Hut is a dome-style with bunk beds.

For each trek on the Mount a dedicated cook will be part of the logistical team. They are professional chefs and have the ability to prepare different kinds of dishes. Please see a sample page for Dietary Menu.

You shouldn't worry- You are in safe hands. Our guides are professionally trained to handle all sorts of distress and respond quickly and accordingly. They all have Wilderness First Aid Responder qualification and they will all time bring you to safety. They will directly call for an emergency evacuation if the situation worsens.

The tours are scheduled to start in Moshi, departing on Daily basis. However, circumstances like clients’ arrival time, activities to be done and client’s preference could affect the program. Our company is flexible for such arrangements and adjustments. Normally the program starts around 7:30 AM
